Feeling Low? A Bike Ride Can Help

As the famous saying goes, you never forget how to ride a bike. There are loads of different types of bike riding, which is one reason why so many different people are able to take part. What you may not know however is that cycling is one of the best sports around for helping to combat depression and is actually prescribed by doctors in many countries. But why is it considered to be such a healing sport?

Outdoors. First and foremost the majority of cycling takes place outdoors. Studies have shown that staying trapped indoors actually makes depression worse and so being in the open air with lots of space is a great release. Additionally the natural surroundings and fresh air are invigorating and can easily lift your mood. Bikes are also a great deal easier to transport than other outdoor equipment like surfboards or used kayaks.

A better body. The causes of depression are incredibly varied, although many people quickly start to follow a similar pattern. Many people begin to neglect their physical health and appearance when they are depressed and this leads to a downward spiral of confidence and mood. Because cycling is an aerobic activity, it helps to reduce fat in the body very effectively and also improves muscle tone. As people start to feel happier with the way they look, their confidence returns and they start to feel better generally.

Endophines. Cycling is one of those exercises that when performed, causes the brain to release endorphins into the blood stream, which are hormone that makes you feel happy. These hormones not only improve you bodies functioning but also reduce stress and increase the feeling of happiness. It is no wonder then that exercise is considered one of the most effective ways of beating depression. So if you’re feeling a bit low, get some second hand bikes and go for a ride with a friend or partner
